Mark started racing in go karts many years ago (as most racers
do) and after a couple of years racing met Daryl Clayden, who was also racing go
karts. The 2 of them went about recruiting another 3 members and formed what was
known as Sonic racing (not to be confused with the current formulae Ford sonic
motor racing)
The acquisition of a bus that was converted into a full race transport with
workshop and sleeping quarters and securing some major backing from local
sponsors made the team what was then the largest privately funded go kart race
team in the country.
With a vision to improve the profile of the sport and foster new talent, a new
junior recruit was brought on board, the one goal for that first year, was for
everyone in the team to win a zone series title. A goal that was realised by all
of the members at the final round in Albany that year, with Daryl winning a zone
title in 2 separate classes.
As happens so often, life gets in the way, and Mark quit racing with a new family on the way with the vision of getting back into it some day, and the team was disband the next year.
After many years of crewing for race teams, Mark finally got a
chance to drive again with a new leopard 125cc kart, and did reasonably well,
but without the same passion that he once held for karting, he was soon invited
to have a drive of his brother Peters speedway street stock.
Well the bug was back, and the first actual dirt track speedway race, was in
Daryl's spare wingless sprintcar at Kwinana motorplex. In the very first race,
Mark started mid field and came through to finish second only being pipped to
post on the last corner of the last lap because of a rookie mistake.
Peter had built a new street stock and was going to sell the old one, but offered it to Mark to drive who naturally jumped at the chance. After a reasonable rookie year, Peter stepped up the following year to a "Late model" and so offered the newer injected EL falcon to Mark to drive.
