whether it is from a bad or uneducated decision or getting the wool pulled over your eyes by a dodgy contractor. If you need any help or advice, go to our facebook page and ask
Are you looking to buy a new home?
Here are a few things to look for.
This one is fairly obvious. Look at the stumps. If they are rotting like this, then you will need to factor in repairing them before doing any renovations. If you renovate and then decide to do the stumps later, you will find that all your hard work has come to nothing as they jack the house up and every wall and ceiling cracks.
Another thing to look for if you go to buy a newly renovated house, are the floors level? if not, the stumps may not have been done, and again, all that wonderful work will be ruined when the restumpers come in.
The next important one before any renovation work. How is the roof? You must make sure that you have a good quality roof on that house, otherwise the first heavy downpour and you could be wearing your ceiling.
Old tin roofs were nailed on and after a while the nails start to pull out, if it hasn't been checked, it could be worth getting that done.
Sheets lifting off because of nails pulling out would have to be the most common damage in high winds.
While you are up there, check that the flue cap is on your chimney. water penetration here is also a common cause of damage to ceilings.
These 2 images may look innocent enough. But they are hiding a much larger problem... Termites. If you see any small holes in the wall, take a closer look, you may poke at it and find that it crumbles very easily and looks as though there is dirt falling out of it. This is a sure sign that termites are eating away at you house. Get a pest exterminator in immediately. then you can start to look and see how big the problem is.
This is the result of ignoring the early signs. These people were lucky, the only damage was to the skirting boards and a couple of studs that held up the door frame.. Which brings me to my next item to look for. If you have any walls that appear to be wobbly. This one was not that hard to pick up as the door was attached to it and had dropped and started rubbing on the floor.
Even if you think it is only something small, check it out early. It could save you thousands.
Don't use the old "she'll be right". If you think something looks a little insecure, do something about it before it becomes a major issue.
